A Multi-Projector Display System of Arbitrary Shape, Size, and Resolution

https://vimeo.com/acmsiggraph/2015etecha112 This project demonstrates automatically calibrated integration of general content delivery from a Windows desktop with a multi-projector display of arbitrary, shape, size, and resolution. These sophisticated, completely automatic geometric and color registration techniques for deploying seamless multi-projector displays on popular non-planar surfaces (for example, cylinders, domes, truncated domes, etc.) have generated significant attention in recent years. This is the first time such calibration has been integrated with content delivery.

Duy-Quoc Lai, Aditi Majumder, Mahdi Tehrani / University of California, Irvine ## Christie Digital Sandbox For the past year, Christie has been working on technology that expands the capabilities of today’s automatic projection-calibration systems. The company's latest technology can seamlessly calibrate projection-mapped displays automatically. Now easy, affordable, and accessible projection mapping is possible on any surface – smooth or complex, even 3D. Projection mapping (or “Shader Lamp”) applications use complex models or features in architecture and the surrounding environment as the display canvas. This powerful and engaging projection application is used for entertainment, visualization, and marketing. But until now, initial setup of a projection-mapped display required a high degree of expertise, and ongoing maintenance of the displays was expensive. For these reasons, projection-mapping displays are usually installed only in large-scale entertainment venues. At SIGGRAPH 2015, Christie presents automatic alignment of a 3D model using its Automapper technology, which can maintain the alignment of a projection display in less than 30 seconds, even after the projector and/or the projection surface is moved.
## High-Brightness HDR Projection Using Dynamic-Phase Modulation
Traditional projection systems use a high-power light source and amplitude (attenuating) light modulators (for example, DMD, LCD, or LCoS) to form an image by blocking light where it is not needed. This approach works well for images with limited dynamic range, but does not efficiently scale to applications that require high peak luminance and dark black levels, such as high-dynamic-range (HDR) content. Image statistics for HDR in the cinema suggest that the average picture level (APL) is typically about 5-10% of the peak luminance. At SIGGRAPH 2014, this development team showed a monochromatic, low-power proof-of-principle projector and demonstrated that light that would otherwise be blocked in image formation can be used effectively to create very bright highlights. The demonstration was very well-received, but there were very obvious image artifacts, and it was unclear at the time how well the proposed technology would scale to the higher power required by larger screens or brighter ambient conditions for practical applications such as cinema, home theater, simulation, theme parks, and advertising. A newly designed custom light source plus, an optimized system architecture, and improved image processing were combined to create the new prototype, which is now full color, 1000 lumens, and largely artifact-free (haloes, sharpness, uniformity, speckle, rendering). While this research prototype is still in an early stage of development, it shows that the technology has the potential to move beyond the research lab and affect our everyday lives.
